Donald Mustard Departs Epic Games After Creating Fortnite

Donald Mustard, creative director of Epic Games, is retiring and leaving the company this month after being a major part of the popular battle royale shooter Fortnite as it is today.

“I’ve enjoyed nearly 25 years in the gaming industry working with some of the most talented people ever, and I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished together,” Mustard said on X (formerly Twitter).

Mustard specifically created CHAIR – where he and his team made the Undertow, Shadow Complex and Infinity Blade trilogy. CHAIR was later acquired by Epic Games in 2008.

After years of work and becoming the global creative director of Epic Games in 2016, Fortnite launched – and of course became a classic – and remains hugely popular both as an esport game and as a casual online multiplayer game.

“I’m especially proud of the opportunity to help create and shape Fortnite,” Mustard said.

He added: “I’m humbled to have been part of a team that strives every day to bring ‘joy and joy’ to the Fortnite community! We love seeing you experience every moment – jumping off the battle bus for the first time, seeing a rocket explode in the sky, dancing with friends after a Victory Royale , being absorbed into a black hole or washed into the sea. The island flipped over – and on and on!”

Fortnite is a game that has grown in scope and appeal over the years, and the game has received its fair share of updates since its release – from the launch of no-build mode to the recent move to Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.

“Excited to spend time with my wife and family and forever grateful to @TimSweeneyEpic and the Epic Games family,” he concluded.
